What’s your New Year’s resolution?
Not to make one. You can’t fail at a goal you don’t set!
Tell us about yourself. What do you want everyone to know about you?
I’ve been married for 20 years. I have two children – one in college and one high school senior. I played semi-pro baseball and then coached for 19 years in addition to owning a business. I went to art school on a full ride – I wanted to illustrate children’s books! I saw Star Wars on opening day in 1977 and I’m a huge fan. I’ve been in healthcare in some capacity (patient care, software, billing, management, development) since I was 19.
Why did you join MDsave? What’s your favorite part of the job?
I was the liaison at a Texas hospital that piloted MDsave for a large system. That system went national, and I joined MDsave. I love my job! I tell people that it’s the hardest job I’ve ever had, but I wouldn’t do anything else. The ability to help patients is important to me. I care for people. The inability to afford care is an enormous stressor when you’re sick, so I feel that what we do helps to alleviate some of that stress.
What’s been your proudest moment on the job?
I was working with a patient access staff member at a facility in Georgia to explain the MDsave program to a patient. The patient had no insurance and was unable to afford the exam. As I asked the patient’s questions, she lowered her head and began to cry. When asked if she was okay, she said she was crying because this test would help find the source of her pain, and she had been worried for a week about how to pay for it. The price through MDsave was within her budget, and she said a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. All three of us got emotional.
What are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about my family, helping people, and food! If I had to do it all again I would have gone to the Culinary Institute of America (CIA). I also LOVE hockey!
I play guitar and sing – I’ve been in a number of classic rock bands. I still create art from time to time, I read (a lot), I love to cook and do so most nights when I’m home. I’m a huge nerd and love to play Euro-style board and card games as well as tabletop miniature war games. Anything with a strategic component is a huge interest of mine.
What do you do to stay healthy?
Lift weights. Racquetball. Hike. Mostly I’m a gym rat.
