Medical student and Sooners fan Tyler knows the ins and outs of working in a doctor’s office. So when he took a turn as a patient, he decided to skip the insurance claim headache and buy his MRI directly. When he consulted Dr. Google, he found MDsave and an MRI for $900 less than he would have paid with insurance.
“I will definitely recommend MDsave to all of my future patients!” – Tyler Rhoades
Tell us about yourself. What do you want everyone to know about you?
My name is Tyler Rhoades, and I’m from Tulsa, Oklahoma. I graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2015 with a degree in Biochemistry and just recently moved to Kansas City to start medical school. I’m a die-hard Oklahoma football fan and Oklahoma City Thunder fan.
What do you do for a living and for fun?
I’m in my first year of medical school at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. I’m also an Ensign in the U.S. Navy Health Professions Scholarship Program. In my free time, I enjoy playing with my dog Graham and exploring local bars and restaurants in Kansas City with my girlfriend, Meghan.
How did you find MDsave?
At first, I tried calling imaging centers around Kansas City for cash prices for an MRI but nobody could quote me a single price. I worked at a doctor’s office for a year prior to starting medical school and dealing with prior authorizations and determining eligibility was a huge headache. With insurance, you never truly know how much of the bill you’ll be responsible for until insurance pays their portion. In my case, I have high deductible insurance and would be lucky if insurance covered 15% of the $1,800 MRI. So I knew cash prices would be my best bet.
MDsave was the first thing that came up when I was Google searching for cash prices for an MRI.
What was it like working with MDsave?
Working with MDsave was exceptional. It was so easy to find the procedure that I needed to have done and I was blown away by the price. It was extremely easy to use the MDsave voucher at the hospital and had the results of my MRI within 24 hours without having to worry about how much my high deductible insurance would actually cover for the $1,800 procedure.
How much did you save?
With MDsave, I paid $420 for an $1,800 MRI. I knew exactly the cost of the MRI before I had it and even had the option to find the best price between the MDsave providers. The best part is that the $420 I paid MDsave for the MRI can count towards my deductible! In total, I easily saved over $900, was able to deduct my costs from an HSA account, and apply the costs towards my deductible.
